The ZV18 is a vented, direct radiating single 18″ subwoofer with a large internal volume, extensive bracing and a very low tuned frequency. Very large ports maximize low frequency performance at high output. The ports exit outside the perimeter of the woofer grill to minimize air flow noise. The port walls, handles and amplifier recess are all designed to serve as braces in addition to their primary purposes, making the cabinet extremely rigid. The port openings and amplifier recess also offer grab points on the front and rear of the cabinet.
BASSBOSS cabinets are hand-built in the USA. Constructed from 18mm Baltic Birch plywood, using dado joints, screws and advanced composite adhesives.
Created to stand up to intense usage. The cabinet is finished in an extremely rugged, black polyurethane coating. Drivers are protected by a black powdercoated, perforated steel grill, and the amp is recessed into the back of the cabinet for protection from damage, direct sun and moisture.
A top-mounted pole socket provides for mid-high loudspeakers to be mounted on a straight speaker pole above the subwoofer. The enclosures feature four large rubber feet on the bottom, with corresponding recesses in the top to facilitate interlocking the boxes when stacked.
There are two handles on each side. The amplifier recess is designed to also serve as a handle on the back of the cabinet and the port openings allow lifting from the front.
A 2400W RMS amplifier with integrated, comprehensive DSP is included. The amplifier is rated for RMS output using continuous sine wave signal.
This is not a Peak or Burst power rating. BASSBOSS uses only continuous RMS power ratings because you’re not going to be using your sub in millisecond bursts. For subwoofer applications, Peak and Burst power ratings are largely irrelevant.
The amplifier is capable of delivering 2400W of continuous output. This ensures the amp isn’t the limiting factor in the output of low frequencies. Providing abundant power prevents overheating issues and virtually eliminates the damage that clipping a too-small amp can cause.
For larger events, several arraying options are available. Block arrays, side-by-side arrays and front/back Cardioid arrays can be deployed securely thanks to the interlocking feet. Presets are included in the DSP.
All that electrical power is converted into acoustical energy by an 18″ neodymium motor woofer. These premium-quality, drivers feature split-wound 4.5″ copper voice coils, and peak-to-peak excursion capability of up to 60mm.
High-intensity Neodymium magnets are lighter and provide higher efficiency so the result is a lighter and louder cabinet. Split-wound coils produce a more linear force through the range of movement of the cone, which results in lower distortion and improved linearity at high output.
The cones are waterproofed to protect them from possible, accidental exposure to moisture such as rain or spilled beverages. Waterproofed woofer cones also permit the cleaning of drivers that have been soiled in a dirty or dusty environment with the use of a damp cloth. Keep the amplifiers dry and party on!
Waterproofed cones in all products. Optional weatherized and weather resistant loudspeakers have the same acoustical performance as our standard options. If your system is likely to be exposed to rain, ask about IP rated amplification options. If you have need of a system for outdoor installation, ask about Weatherized products.
BASSBOSS subs can be connected directly to your mixer with nothing but signal cable in between. The built-in processing is comprehensive and yet minimal manipulation is applied to the signal. The processing includes only a high pass filter and a low-pass filter. There is no need for any EQ in the signal for the speaker to provide a broad, flat frequency response. A sophisticated limiter system protects the woofer from thermal and over-excursion damage.

BASSBOSS technical specs are based upon measurements of continuous performance capabilities in normal usage. Other manufacturers may specify output based on calculations rather than measurements; measurements outside the operating bandwidth; or on ‘Burst’ or ‘Peak’ readings.
BASSBOSS specifications are conservative compared to most manufacturers. They reflect what the products will achieve, consistently, in the real world. Since the real world is where you’ll be using your gear.

After having been able to test the ZV18 boxes now for a few months in different configurations and at different locations, I have to say they have consistently impressed me more and more.
When you first hear a system like this, it’s a bit intimidating. It takes time to get used to the way it does what it does, and how best to work with it. From day one it was obvious that we were dealing with something that could effortlessly handle everything we threw at it, but it took a bit more time to understand how we were supposed to handle it. I don’t at all mean to say that it’s complicated, because it isn’t, but instead to say that we had to change our practices as people who run live sound.
When you run a lot of shows in a lot of location with a lot of different equipment that’s owned by people who can only invest so much in their sound, you learn to compensate for the failings of the equipment. I’ve learned how to make many systems from low cost to your standard mid level JBL equivalent type equipment to sound pretty good, but at the expense of the long life of the equipment. This means things get damaged and replaced more often than we’d like because we have to push everything far harder than it can deal with; even though many of the systems claim otherwise!
Now when we began getting used to the ZV18’s, along with the pair of DJ112’s we also have, our entire approach shifted with every show. How we work with the bands has also totally changed when it comes to setup and handling their sound. Essentially we now don’t “try” to be loud, at all. Instead, we find the appropriate volume for the space we are in and don’t need to be louder than that need. Bassists now just plug right in, guitarists stop cranking their cabinets obnoxiously, singers don’t have to scream or eat the mic to be heard, keyboardists leave their amps at home, DJ’s don’t screw with the levels on their end (once they get it).
And the bass… I mean, that’s what we got these bad boys for right! I’ve heard a lot of great club systems, and a lot of sub-par ones. Even the best ones I’ve heard don’t seem to have something the ZV18 has at its core… Effortlessness. With low frequency extension down to 24Hz each, and 21Hz or lower when more are coupled, the lowest notes in all the music we’ve played is completely present and easy. At a recent event we put the system through a few bass tests with all four in a cube configuration. A friend of mine who worked for years in the past in car audio doing SPL competitions threw on some music he described as having destroyed many a speaker… It was like hearing and feeling the subs breath into the space, as if they were being given a glove made to fit them. Instead of working hard by requiring a huge amount of excursion for low frequencies as many of us know is a big part of how car audio drivers do what they do, these boxes are simply made to do it easily without requiring their very respectable excursion capabilities be tested. So your lows are there always, which leads us to the next points…
Here’s the thing… Because these boxes are able to so easily hit the lowest frequencies, it’s not just about that. It means that all the bass frequencies they reproduce are incredibly clean, and sounds you never even knew were in your tracks are all of a sudden present and clear. This counts all music, not just dance. And on top of their incredible capacity for high levels of super clean bass, is their incredible capacity for all of that bass to be present at all sound levels. I was completely blown away to realize that the boxes David designed are so bass efficient at all the levels, that even at what one might consider a 2 or 3 on the dial, it already shakes the walls of a house. And that’s with concrete floors, with wood floors things get ridiculous very quickly.
There’s nothing about the ZV18’s that makes you feel like they must be loud to sound good, because it’s simply not the case. It’s sure as hell that at some point we’ll have a chance to drive these things as hard as they were designed to take it, but at even less than a quarter of their capacity, with the boxes at half, and the input from an audio source at half, they already fill the room or stage in smaller venues better than most.
Now that you’ve heard that they sound good, what about the rest. Yes, other stuff matters too!
The ZV18 packs the lowest end into a box per driver design that currently exists on the market for a portable subwoofer. While not a small box, they are in fact quite portable. They are actually deceptively small, because when you see the pictures posted, it doesn’t really do well to describe the depth at 3’. That said, they go through normal doors, and can be lifted comfortably by two people; and you won’t find a lack of help at the venues you set-up at, because everyone wants these babies set up to play through… No, seriously.
I was the first recipient of the ZV18’s, and I got four of them. I took a gamble on a smaller company who showed a kind of passion about sound, and in particular bass, that i’ve simply never seen outside of the car audio world (and that is not remotely the same kind of sound)… This is fully professional (pro-audio), top tier product that nobody else matches. This is a designer and President (David Lee) who is so passionate, experienced, and dedicated to this art, that the only thing which comes close to eclipsing the quality of his work, is how much he is willing to connect with his customers to find solutions, answer questions, and work through every detail until you get exactly what you want, exceeding expectations at every turn. Not only that, but even with all of his expertise, he listens. I can’t say that enough… He listens and genuinely has interest in his customers growing their understanding.
On this first edition is a grill I designed for the DJ112 pair that is the complement which makes this system whole. And when it came time and I saw the ZV18 design, I realized this cabinet might be able to have one as well. David worked with me to modify my design to work on this box, made great suggestions, and to be honest was able to push the vision even further than I wanted to originally. These things came out incredibly and working with David made every part of the process worth the time.
To conclude… Should you buy a ZV18? Maybe. Maybe it’s overkill and the SSP118 will hit the higher sub bass and cleanly scream at your audience in the way you want. Maybe this isn’t really enough and you ought to go for the truly bad ass ZV28.
Shit, even one of these will blow you away.
